Why It Happens
Surgery repairs a structure. It does not hand back strength, motion, or confidence. Those come from the work around it. Going in stiff and weak means you start recovery from further back than you had to. Coming out, swelling and guarding switch off the muscle around that joint fast. That happens within days, and reversing it is exactly what rehab is built to do.
Your surgeon sets the protocol, and your therapist follows it to the letter. What happens here is the part the protocol asks for and cannot supervise: correct form, correct dose, correct week. A cause-first evaluation shows what to build before your date and what to protect after it. You have handled every hard thing on your own so far. This is one you do not have to do alone.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like before and after an operation, always inside your surgeon’s protocol.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
Swelling control, gentle hands-on work, and safe early motion, kept strictly inside the limits your surgeon set.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
Guided range of motion meets each protocol target on time, without pushing past what the repair can take.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Progressive loading brings back the muscle that shut down, on both sides, not just the operated one.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
Stairs, work demands, and sport get tested against your own goals before you finish. That is the endpoint.
Was a patient of Dr. Moy (Andrew) for about six months following shoulder surgery. While the first few sessions were a bit painful, the therapy and guidance were spot on, and I have recovered with a 100% range of motion. It was always enjoyable conversation and I highly recommend if you’re in need for a highly skilled therapist.

Most patients feel meaningful change within 4 to 6 visits. A full plan runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, usually over 8 to 10 weeks depending on how long you have been dealing with it. Either way you get a plan with an endpoint, so you always know which phase you are in and what is left.
No. Illinois has direct access, so you can book an evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy without a physician referral. Some insurance plans still ask for one before they will pay, so we check your benefits before your first visit and tell you exactly where you stand.
Yes. Every session at Amplify Physical Therapy and Wellness is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit, for the full hour. You are never handed to an aide and never share your appointment with another patient, which is why your plan can be adjusted in real time as your body responds.
