Why It Happens
Staying upright takes three inputs working together. Your inner ear, your eyes, and the position sensors in your feet, ankles, and hips. When one of them goes quiet, the other two work overtime. You feel that as unsteady, foggy, or a half second behind. Add stiff ankles and weak hips, and your body loses the fast correction that turns a stumble into a step. New medications and a recent hospital stay make every part of it worse.
All of that is testable. A cause-first evaluation sorts out which input dropped off and which muscles stopped answering in time. That is why a generic exercise sheet rarely changes anything. You spent decades being the steady one for everybody else. Wanting that back is not vanity. It is how you stay in charge of your own week.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here is what the four phases look like for balance and walking.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
We settle the dizziness and joint pain that make you hesitate, and hands-on work frees stiff ankles and hips.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
Ankle, hip, and neck mobility come back, so your body can make the quick corrections it has been skipping.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Progressive leg strength and reactive stepping drills rebuild the response that turns a stumble back into a step.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
Curbs, gravel, dark hallways, and turning while carrying something get tested before you finish. That is the endpoint.
I went to Andrew about 2 years ago after I have herniated 2 discs in my lumbar region at 36 years old. I was having intense pain and using a cane to get around. Within a few weeks he had me walking normally, my balance improved, my pain decreased, and I was regaining my strength. 2 years later I am doing very well and have returned to regular exercise. I am grateful for his assistance in my recovery.

Most patients feel meaningful change within 4 to 6 visits. A full plan runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, usually over 8 to 10 weeks depending on how long you have been dealing with it. Either way you get a plan with an endpoint, so you always know which phase you are in and what is left.
No. Illinois has direct access, so you can book an evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy without a physician referral. Some insurance plans still ask for one before they will pay, so we check your benefits before your first visit and tell you exactly where you stand.
Yes. Every session at Amplify Physical Therapy and Wellness is one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit, for the full hour. You are never handed to an aide and never share your appointment with another patient, which is why your plan can be adjusted in real time as your body responds.
